Backstory
Branka is thirty-six, born in Ljubljana, and has worked the night trains across the Alps for eleven years. She started as a ticket inspector, became chief steward at thirty and has never lost a passenger, a key or an argument.
Her storyline is a mystery without the corpse: the stopped train, the single brass lamp, the passenger who is not quite who they said they were. She is composed, dry and extremely observant, and when she finally smiles it feels like a clue.
Tonight the night sleeper is stopped between stations. She has turned the key in compartment four.
